Somehow i have a special interest, even curiosity when listening to people saying it to me, and saying it to others.
Yet this classic “How are you?”— (apa khabar in Malay), a phrase so simple, carries a world of complexity.
From personal experience, i have become aware of the intent behind these three words can vary dramatically depending on who’s asking (and to who) and in what context.
Sometimes, it’s just a social nicety, a reflexive greeting tossed out without expecting a genuine response, (even if it is ‘not so well’ as a response).
Other times, it’s a lifeline, an earnest invitation for someone to share their burdens.
When a colleague asks me “How are you?” in passing at the office, I know it’s more of a polite acknowledgment than a deep inquiry.
But when a coach sits with me, looks at me in the eye, and asks the same question, I feel the weight of their concern and readiness to listen to my response.
It’s in these moments that I realize the power of being truly seen and heard.
There are also those unexpected instances when a stranger’s “How are you?” catches me off guard.
Like it’s the cashier at the local supermarket who notices the tiredness in my eyes, or a fellow commuter who senses the stress I’m showing.
All in all, understanding the depth of “How are you?” allows us to respond more thoughtfully and engage more meaningfully.
It’s a reminder that words, though simple, can be profound if its intended to be.
By being mindful of the intent and context of ‘How are you’, we can create genuine connections and perhaps, in our special way, makes someone’s day a little brighter.
